Winter Home Maintenance Checklist
As the cold creeps in, it’s time to make sure your home is ready to handle whatever winter throws your way. Here’s a quick checklist to keep your space safe, warm, and in tip-top shape this season:
Seal Up Drafts
Check doors, windows, and vents for leaks. Add weather stripping or caulk to keep your heating bill under control and your home cozy.
Service the Furnace
Schedule a professional tune-up and replace the filter. A healthy furnace works more efficiently and keeps you warm when it matters most.
Inspect the Roof and Gutters
Clear gutters of leaves and debris, and check the roof for any loose or damaged shingles. Proper drainage prevents ice dams and leaks.
Chimney Check
If you have a fireplace, ensure the chimney is clean and safe for use. A certified sweep can help avoid fire hazards.
Prepare for Snow and Ice
Locate shovels, stock up on ice melt, and test the snowblower. Being prepared makes snow days a little less stressful.
Protect Your Pipes
Insulate exposed pipes in unheated spaces like the garage or basement. Consider letting faucets drip during extreme cold to avoid freezing.
Check Smoke and CO Detectors
Test the batteries and ensure both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly- especially if you’ll be using a fireplace or space heater.
Trim Overhanging Branches
Prevent storm damage by trimming any tree limbs that could break and fall under the weight of snow or ice.
Reverse Ceiling Fans
Set ceiling fans to spin clockwise to push warm air down and keep rooms more comfortable.
Stock Up on Essentials
Keep an emergency kit ready with flashlights, batteries, blankets, and a stash of non-perishable food and water. Winter storms can catch anyone off guard!
A little prep now can save a lot of headaches later. Feel free to share this checklist with your friends and family, and they’ll appreciate you looking out for their home sweet home!
