Don't Forget to Change Your Address! Places to Notify When You Move
Moving into a new home can be an exciting undertaking! However, with all the packing, coordinating, and unpacking involved, it's easy to overlook one of the the most vital elements of the whole process - updating your address. When you buy or sell a home, it's important to change your address with a variety of organizations and service providers. This can ensure that you continue to receive important mail and services, and that your personal information remains secure. In this blog, we will discuss some of the most critical places that you must notify when you move to ensure a smooth transition into your new home.
United States Postal Service (USPS)
This is one of the first places you should update your address. Do this online or by visiting your nearest post office. This will also ensure that mail is forwarded to your new address for any specific senders you may forget to inform.
Online Retailers
Think Amazon, Walmart, or your favorite go-to site! If you have any subscriptions or accounts retailers like these, it's important to update your address so you don't miss any deliveries.
Voter Registrations
Don't wait until it's too late! Check with your local board for specific guidance on how to update.
Delivery Subscriptions
Don't let your favorite Hello Fresh meal, for example, go to waste! It's happened - sellers sending meals for the week to the new owners, not on purpose..
Utility Providers
Inform your utility providers - think gas, electric, water, internet, etc. to ensure no interruption in service and that your bills make it to the right place.
Financial Advisors, Attorneys & Other Professionals
This will ensure you receive important statements or documents sent by mail.
Mortgage Provider
This will prevent any delays in receiving that escrow refund (talking to you, sellers!), important end-of-year tax documents, and more.
Banks and Financial Institutions
Notify all financial institutions where you have accounts, including loans and investments. This will help prevent missed payments, late fees, and fraud.
Credit Card Companies
To ensure bills and payments received in a timely fashion, and avoid raising fraud concerns for your credit providers.
Schools
If there are children in the home, schools should also be notified of the change in address.
County Department
Updating your local County is important so your personal property tax documents experience no delay in reaching you.
Insurance Providers
Think car, health, and home insurance providers, too! This will ensure no gap in coverage.
Healthcare Providers
Notify your doctors, dentists, and any other healthcare providers to ensure continued care and accessibility to medical records.
Family and Friends
Last but certainly not lease, notify those close to you so you can coordinate visits and receive fun mail, too!
