5 Essential Items Every Parent of Littles Should Have at Home
If you’re raising little ones at home, having a handful of smart, practical items can make a big difference in your day-to-day life. Here are 5 of our favorite, must-have items:
1. Door Chimes
A door chime gives you that heads-up when someone enters or exits, which is especially helpful if your little ones are playing in the next room. These are absolutely essential if you have a pool or live on a busy street. We like these because they have an adjustable volume and a simple design.
2. Cabinet Locks
Whether it’s cleaning supplies, breakables, or simply items you don’t want them getting into, cabinet locks provide a simple barrier. Magnetic or invisible versions, like this one, avoid the “baby-proof” look while getting the job done. They’re also great for older toddlers who may be able to figure out other mechanisms. As long as the unlocking tool is out of reach or hidden, they can’t break in.
3. A Safety or Security Gate
A gate isn’t only for staircases. Use it in doorways, around play zones, or at the entry to a home office. Look for one that’s easy for adults to open and that fits your space cleanly. This retractable one is great for saving space and this one is great for stairs with banisters or uneven walls. Gates give your little one(s) a safe boundary while you get things done nearby.
4. A Quality Play Pen
Whether it’s for supervised independent play, midday naps, or just a safe corner while you prep dinner, a play pen offers a safe boundary. Look for one that’s spacious and easy to clean like this one. This will let your kids play safely and confidently while being able to still see you nearby. Plus, it sets a defined zone they’ll learn to recognize as “play space.”
5. Step Stools
A sturdy step stool in the kitchen and bathroom empowers older toddlers or preschoolers to participate and encourages independence (hand washing, brushing teeth, helping you cook, etc.). Choose one with non-slip feet that's foldable and easy for the child to carry independently - we like this one. This is a simple tool that encourages independence while reducing their need to interrupt you for help.
